Have you checked your Google organic search traffic this morning? If not, you may want to. It seems Google may have tweaked their search ranking algorithm, your site may be ranking higher or lower or the same depending on if this update has impacted your web pages. Google has not yet confirmed the update but based on a lot of chatter in the search community, it seems like an update is indeed happening. To be clear, it seems like there were two updates in the past twenty-four hours. The large Continue Reading ...

This may seem strange coming from an SEO guy, but there are many situations where organic search may not be the best option for a given marketing challenge. In fact, there are times when SEO is just simply not a good fit. In this article, I am going to look at a few common scenarios we see at my agency where we have been contacted for SEO and have fed back that we believe that SEO is either not aligned with their requirements or there is some other form of mismatch (speed, budget, etc.). 1. Google testing image thumbnails in mobile search results again

AmsStudio / Shutterstock.com Google is testing showing image thumbnails in the mobile search results again. They did this back in December 2014, and we know Google is constantly testing user interfaces, so this should come as no surprise. Dan Smullen shared a screen shot with us on Twitter showing this off. We can personally not replicate this, but here is that screen shot: We have emailed Google for a comment about this, but we suspect it will be the line about Google constantly testing and Continue Reading ...

SEO is now a digital marketing activity used by 94 percent of marketers, and it’s estimated that companies will spend just over $65 billion on SEO in 2016. Yet despite the increasing usage of and growing investment in this digital marketing channel, measuring the ROI of SEO efforts can still present a considerable challenge for marketers. For brands to maximize the impact of SEO, they need to be able to communicate the value of their efforts and show their CMO just how well SEO is Continue Reading ...

Measuring your results is a critical component of any SEO campaign. There are many, many variables at play in an SEO campaign, so successful campaigns rely on a control system to ensure the work undertaken delivers results. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) act as this control system and allow you to identify what is working — and often, more importantly, provide the SEO with an early warning system if something is not moving the needle as expected. KPIs also provide a means to illustrate Continue Reading ...

As most SEOs know, links are still extremely important to ranking highly in the Google search results. In fact, a recent study performed by Backlinko showed that “the number of domains linking to a page correlated with rankings more than any other factor.” Thus, it makes sense for most all large companies with a significant website presence to implement a regular link pruning schedule. At ymarketing, we call our process of link pruning “link remediation.” The normal way most sites Continue Reading ...

Google removes special presidential candidates box that omitted Trump

Just up to a couple hours ago, a search for [presidential candidates] in Google did not return the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, in the list. Instead it showed Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders from the Democratic party and Jill Stein from the Green Party. It omitted Donald Trump from the Republican party. Here is a screen shot I captured at 8:15am ET this morning. We have reached out to Google about this a few hours ago, but have still not heard back about this glaring omission. One SEO Continue Reading ...

Take advantage of Microsoft’s Power BI (Business Intelligence) rollout in 2016 to collect and analyze more data than ever before and find the SEO performance gaps you didn’t even know about. If you’re not familiar with Microsoft’s Business Intelligence paradigm, then I heartily recommend you take a walk through their promotional material. The most pertinent part for SEOs is the ability to embed Queries in the latest Office 360 suite natively (without requiring Power Query extensions in Continue Reading ...

Is your HTTPS setup causing SEO issues?

Google has been making the push for sites to move to HTTPS, and many folks have already started to include this in their SEO strategy. Recently at SMX Advanced, Gary Illyes from Google said that 34 percent of the Google search results are HTTPS. That’s more than I personally expected, but it’s a good sign, as more sites are becoming secured. However, more and more, I’m noticing a lot of sites have migrated to HTTPS but have not done it correctly and may be losing out on the HTTPS ranking Continue Reading ...

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, regulators at the European Commission (EC) are preparing a “supplementary statement of objections” in the existing shopping search antitrust matter. The EC filed the original “statement of objections” (formal antitrust charges) regarding Google’s alleged abuse of market power in early 2015. While the EC focused exclusively on shopping search in the original charges, it is widely expected that shopping is a kind of template for other Continue Reading ...
